David Beckham joins Andrew Murray's admirers

David Beckham has joined the ever-growing number of Andrew Murray's admirers. Some kind of record for the speed of celebrity achieved by a British tennis player seems to have been set because yesterday the 18-year-old Scot even had the England football captain comparing himself with Andrew Murray.

Four months ago Andrew Murray was virtually unheard of. Now the man who has taken sporting celebrity to the top talked of the pressures, which could soon be facing the teenage player.

AndrewMurray "Of course, everyone knows about him in our country, I think he's great," said the Real Madrid player, who had come to watch one of his own supporters, Rafael Nadal, reach the quarter-finals of the Masters Series here, only to miss the match by getting held up by traffic.

"I think it's good to have new people coming through. We've obviously got Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski, but to have Murray coming through I think it's great for our country. I've seen his mother talk on the TV and I think he's got strong parents behind him, and that's what he needs, that's what he can rely on, because I've had that in my life."

"But I haven't got any advice for him because I'm sure his parents can do that for him," David Beckham added.

Judy Murray, the Scot's mother-manager, said "Certainly Andy's not quite reached the heights of David Beckham in terms or recognisability or being in the public eye."

"But it will happen, and then he will have to be more careful. But David Beckham's right. Andy needs to know he's got a strong team around him so he can handle it as well as he has so far.

"It's great for Andy to know that David Beckham is a tennis fan. He will be flattered that one of the world's most famous footballers is taking an interest in him."
