US sprinter Tyson Gay has hamstring injury

tyson gayUS sprinter Tyson Gay has withdrawn from racing against Jamaica's Asafa Powell at Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury.

The race is scheduled to take place on Friday, and is considered as one of the highlights of the London Grand Prix so it is unfortunate that Gay will have to miss out on it.

Tennis star Andy Murray beats Thomas Johansson

andy murrayScottish tennis star Andy Murray has gone forward into round three of the Toronto Masters after he beat Swedish player Thomas Johansson with a 6-4 6-4 score on Wednesday despite bad weather, which delayed the game.

Murray had gained a bye in the first round to qualify to play against Johansson, whom he had already defeated 7-6 6-0 in Doha earlier this year.

Motorsport boss Max Mosley wins case against News of the World

max mosleyMotorsport boss Max Mosley, who has recently been the subject of a scandal over an alleged Nazi-themed orgy, has won his case against the News of the World newspaper, which had published the story about him.

The High Court ruled that the News of the World breached Mr Mosley's privacy, and he was awarded £60,000 in damages.

International Olympic Committee bans Iraqi athletes

IOCThe International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned Iraqi athletes from competing at this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing.

The team from Iraq had already been under an interim ban because the Iraqi government had changed the country's Olympic committee for its own appointees, however, the IOC charter states that all committees must be free of political influence.

American golf star Michelle Wie for the Reno-Tahoe Open

michelle wieAmerican teenage golf star Michelle Wie is taking part in a PGA Tour event once more when she will be a contestant in the Reno-Tahoe Open that begins on 31 July.

Wie has been in seven men's golf tournaments so far since her professional debut in the sport when she was hyped as a "teenage sensation" but despite all the publicity she has yet to make the cut.

Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe postpones fight with Roy Jones Jr

joe calzagheWelsh boxer Joe Calzaghe has had to postpone the planned September super-fight with Roy Jones Jr in New York because he has injured his hand.

The undefeated fighter from Newbridge hurt his right hand whilst training and there is no chance it will have recovered sufficiently in time for the bout.

Serena Williams is out of the East West Bank Classic

serena williamsAmerican tennis star Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles on Tuesday due to an injured knee.

26-year-old Serena Williams decided in her practice session that it was hurt too badly to carry on and so she joined her sister Venus, Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who are also sidelined.

Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell beats Usain Bolt

asafa powellJamaican sprinter Asafa Powell defeated compatriot and world record holder Usain Bolt in the contest between the world's fastest men runners at Tuesday's Grand Prix in Stockholm.

Powell, who had watched Bolt claim his record back at the end of May, finished and won the race in 9.88 seconds, just one hundredth of a second before Bolt.
