Norwegian skier Kjetil Andre Aamodt announces retirement
Norwegian four-time Olympic skiing champion Kjetil Andre Aamodt has announced his retirement from sport.
Kjetil Andre Aamodt, 35, who won a record eight Olympic and 12 world championship medals, made his surprising announcement on Norwegian television on Saturday.
"I feel tired both mentally and physically and that is why I've decided to quit. I also have a family to consider," said Kjetil Andre Aamodt.
Kjetil Andre Aamodt had undergone surgery on his knee last March and has not been active in sport this season.
Kjetil Andre Aamodt had suffered the injury during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, and this compelled him to give up his combined crown without a fight, although he then bounced back to defend his super-G title.
Kjetil Andre Aamodt won his first Olympic medals at the 1992 Games in Albertville and from then onward enjoyed a very successful career, which included 21 World Cup wins.
