Kitzbuehel World Cup organisers to fly in more snow to Austria
Kitzbuehel World Cup organisers are going to fly in a vast quantity of snow to the resort in Austria in an attempt to save this month's prestigious winter sports race meeting, and about 4,000 cubic metres of extra snow, at a cost of several hundred thousand euros, will be required to allow the races from 26-28 January to go ahead.
The warm temperatures being experienced across Europe have so far prevented the resort of Kitzbuehel, home to the famous Hahnenkamm downhill, putting on sporting contests.
"The missing snow will have to be transported in to ensure we have a piste to race on," said Kitzbuehel World Cup organisers.
The International Ski Federation (FIS) is going to inspect the conditions and site in Kitzbuehel on Tuesday.
Unsuitable weather conditions have already caused the cancellation or relocation of several World Cup winter sports events, sparking worries that warmer winters might endanger the future of ski resorts.
On Friday, the organisers of this weekend's men's World Cup meeting in Wengen had to cancel the opening super-combined event due to rain and warm temperatures.
A downhill race is due to be held on Saturday and either a slalom or the postponed super-combined race on the Sunday.
