Italian alpine skier Patrick Staudacher wins super-G in Sweden
Italian alpine skier Patrick Staudacher won the super-G at the World Ski Championships in Are, Sweden and his victory was as much a surprise to him as it was to anyone else.
Patrick Staudacher, 26, was taking part in his first world championships and had recently recovered from eye surgery, but he managed to clock a time of one minute 14.30 seconds and win gold.
The start of the World Ski Championships had been delayed three times already due to bad weather conditions including blizzards, gales and low cloud.
But when it finally got going the weather was fine and Patrick Staudacher, took advantage of it to deliver his winning performance.
Overcome with joy and surprise, Patrick Staudacher said: "This is a dream come true. It's madness."
And explaining how he won, Patrick Staudacher added: "The conditions today suited me perfectly. I was able to attack, to take risks, to ski aggressively and just let the skis go."
