Croatian Olympic skiing champion Janica Kostelic withdraws from women's downhill
Croatian triple Olympic champion Janica Kostelic has withdrawn from Wednesday's women's downhill due to an irregular heartbeat.
23-year-old Janica Kostelic had planned to compete in all five Olympic
alpine disciplines in Turin but has been forced to pull out of this
one.
Janica Kostelic missed the 2003-04 season because of thyroid gland surgery, and had a sixth knee operation last summer.
"She had a higher pulse and after her thyroid operation we want to be careful," explained a team spokesman.
"She will start in all the other disciplines but not in today's downhill."
Janica Kostelic had been tipped as one of the strongest contestants in
the downhill, and she won the slalom, giant slalom and combined in Salt
Lake City in 2002.
French reigning champion Carole Montillet will now start the downhill, in spite of a bad fall whilst training on Monday.
And American Lindsey Kildow will also compete even though she was
rushed to hospital in Turin after hitting her head in a crash on the
same training run.
