Austrian skier Marlies Schild wins slalom in Zagreb
Austrian skier Marlies Schild won her fourth slalom victory in five races with a triumphant performance in Zagreb.
Marlies Schild led Swedish opponent and Olympic champion Anja Paerson by 1.09 seconds after the first run down Mount Sljeme, however, Anja Paerson failed to complete the second leg, which allowed Marlies Schild to win by 1.66 seconds.
Croatian skier Ana Jelusic was in second place for the first podium finish of her World Cup career with Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic in third position.
This win extends Marlies Schild's lead at the top of the women's overall standings.
Anja Paerson, who made her comeback to sport in Zagreb after missing the last slalom race due to a knee problem, lost her balance with three or four gates still to go and slid face-down on the snowy slope.
And Swedish entrant Therese Borssen, who ended Marlies Schild's run of success last week in a slalom in Semmering, Austria, was fifth after the first leg but also had to quit on the second leg after straddling a gate.
