Austrian Olympic champion skier Benjamin Raich is closer to World Cup crown
Austrian double Olympic champion skier Benjamin Raich of Austria has
got closer to his first overall World Cup title with a win at slalom in
Japan.
Benjamin Raich clocked one minute 36.66 seconds to triumph over Japan's Akira Sasaki and Canada's Thomas Grandi in third.
Benjamin Raich can only be caught by Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal, who needs to win all events that are still to run.
The closest rival to Benjamin Raich, fellow Austrain Michael Walchhofer, missed the two races in Japan.
"There is an excellent chance that I'll win the title," said Benjamin
Raich, who had claimed gold in the slalom and giant slalom at last
month's Turin Olympics.
"It shows that you are constant over two or three disciplines and that's something that is important to me."
Benjamin Raich improved to 360 points in the World Cup slalom standings
and is now 155 behind Italian Giorgio Rocca with the race on Saturday
and the final slalom of this season in Are, Sweden on 18 March still to
go.
