Austrian Benjamin Raich wins men's slalom in Finland
Austrian skier Benjamin Raich has won the first men's slalom of the World Cup season in Levi in Finland.
Benjamin Raich won both legs in a combined one minute 42.13 seconds to defeat Swedish skier Markus Larsson by 0.62secs and Italian Giorgio Rocca a further 0.15secs back.
But ex-overall champion Bode Miller of America and his teammate Ted Ligety, a combined Olympic gold winner, didn't make the 30-man cut for the final run and Alain Baxter from Scotland joined them and was classified 34th.
"It's my first win in the first race of the season, so I'm very happy," said Benjamin Raich, the reigning world and Olympic slalom champion.
"You never know before, even though we had good training. The course was in perfect condition but it wasn't easy. It was icy.
"My second run was perfect. It was very smooth. I had a lot of fun," Benjamin Raich added.
