American skier Ted Ligety gets Olympic gold but Bode Miller was disqualified
American skier Ted Ligety won gold in the men's combined skiing event,
with an his impressive slalom performance under the floodlights in
Zestier on Wednesday.
"Ligety Split," as the skier is known, rocketed ahead from third to
first on his final run, and finished in a time of three minutes, 9.35
seconds.
But the pressure was getting too much for race leader Benjamin Reich
and he crashed out of it. However, Croatian Ivica Kostelic took silver
and Austrian Rainer Schoenfelder won bronze.
Ted Ligety's win was a wonderful consolation for the American team,
which were disappointed to see favourite Bode Miller, 28, get
disqualified for straddling a gate on the first slalom run.
Fellow American, Bode Miller was in the lead after the morning downhill
and it seemed he was going to take gold until television replays
confirmed his error.
It was the second time that Bode Miller was going to be disappointed
because he also missed out on the medals taking fifth place in Sunday's
downhill.
But Bode Miller, who still has three events to go, was typically upbeat, despite getting disqualified.
"Obviously it's a drag but the downhill was good and I made it to the
finish - that's at least half the battle for me," Bode Miller said.
