American skier Julia Mancuso wins her first Alpine World Cup
American skier Julia Mancuso won her first Alpine World Cup race with a triumph in Tuesday's women's downhill at Val d'Isere in France.
Olympic giant slalom champion, 22-year-old Julia Mancuso clocked one minute, 38.93 seconds to defeat Renate Goetschl into second place by just 0.43 seconds and last year's winner, Lindsey Kildow, was third in a time of 1:39.47.
However, the race was delayed by 15 minutes after Italian Nadia Fanchini had a nasty collision during her run when she crashed into the safety netting and had to be taken away on a stretcher with pains in her knee and head.
The Italian Ski Federation said that Nadia Fanchini had suffered concussion and a statement said:
"Nadia broke her wrist in two places and briefly lost consciousness.
"She has been taken to Mouthiers hospital where she has had a scan which did not reveal any more problems."
Julia Mancuso, who had three podium finishes last season, underwent an operation to correct a long-term hip problem in the off-season.
"I'm just coming back from that and it's been tough but I knew I had a pretty good run, it felt smooth," Julia Mancuso said.
