Swedish women curlers beat Switzerland for Olympic gold
The Swedish women's curler team edged Switzerland 7-6 and clinched an Olympic gold in an exciting extra-end final.
In the lead for most of the contest, the defending world champions were
6-4 up before Switzerland forced an extra end with two points in the
10th.
However, skip Anette Norberg kept her nerve with a last-stone double
takeout and added the Olympic crown to the Swedish world and European
titles.
Earlier on, the Canadians beat Norway 11-5 to take the bronze medal on Thursday.
Sweden's win in Pinerolo made sure that Switzerland, who lost to Great
Britain in the 2002 final, had to make do with their second successive
Olympic silver in the women's event.
It was Sweden's best result in the competition, after having first taken the bronze in Nagano in 1998.
"It's an amazing feeling," said Swedish curler lead Anna Svared.
"The team really deserved it. We so deserved it because we are mentally
so strong and have the best team spirit," Anna Svared added.
