Sweden win final Winter Olympics gold in ice hockey
Sweden claimed the final gold of the Turin Games in the ice hockey final after an exciting 3-2 victory over Finland.
Finland were in the lead at first due to the performance of Kimmo
Timonen but the Swedish side gained control in the second period of the
tie.
Henrik Zetteberg equalised and then Niklas Kronwall caused Sweden to take the lead.
However, Finland hit back in the closing seconds of the period through
Ville Peltonen, only for the Finnish team to be denied by Nicklas
Lidstrom's victorious goal.
Nicklas Lidstrom's goal came just eight seconds into the final period
and, in spite of a series of shots on goal by Finland, Sweden held
their position to claim their first gold since they beat Canada at the
1994 Games in Lillehammer.
"It's a great feeling," said forward Daniel Alfredsson of Sweden.
"We knew going in that we had a good team and we had to play our best
to win. We had four lines that could contribute every night and that
was the difference in the tournament."
Finnish defender Toni Lydman said that the silver was still an achievement they were pleased with.
"It's a big thing for a little country like ours," Toni Lydman said.
"We've come back to our supporters with a medal which is important."
It was the first time Finland had been beaten at the Games having won all seven of their other matches on the ice.
