Rhona Martin's British women curlers have lost
Britain's women's curling team led by Rhona Martin saw their Olympic
title defence end dramatically even though they had a 10-4 win over the
USA in their last match.
The win had given the British team an outside chance of gaining a place
for the last four but Rhona Martin's side still needed Canada to lose
to Denmark, and unfortunately for Britain the Canadians won.
The Danish side levelled at 8-8 going into the last end, before the Canadians managed a 9-8 last-stone victory.
Rhona Martin had almost half an hour to hope for a win still, having
saved her biggest triumph of the competition for the last group game,
in which they easily overtook their opponents, but while she watched
the Danish team put up a fight, the favoured Canadians slowly but
surely emerged on top.
Rhona Martin had, in the past, led Britain to a famous victory at the
2002 Games in Salt Lake City, however, she admitted the new methods of
selection had made it difficult for the 2006 team to come together.
Britain had chosen their curlers on an individual basis for the Turin
Games, selecting the top five rather than a team already built up
around the skip.
However, even though she had lost out, Rhona Martin said her international career was not necessarily finished yet.
"There is no point feeling sorry for yourself and now we will all look
forward to playing against each other in the Scottish Championships
next week," Rhona Martin said.
