Canadian ice hockey star Wayne Gretzky shoulders blame for Canada's Olympic exit
Canadian ice hockey star Wayne Gretzky shouldered the blame for his
country's very surprising Olympic Games exit after Canada made the
worst finish in the event for 26 years.
Canada, who were the defending champions, lost 2-0 to Russia in the quarter-finals and lost twice in the first round.
"I take full responsibility. It's nobody else's fault," said Wayne Gretzky, Canada's executive director.
"I will reassess what's best for me and for Hockey Canada. I want to win gold at the Vancouver Games in 2010."
Wayne Gretzky had led ice hockey-crazy Canada to triumph in Salt Lake
City four years ago, and ended a lack of Olympic gold medals for 50
years.
But Wayne Gretzky said the disappointment he was feeling at being
defeated by Russia was as bad as finishing fourth at the 1998 Games in
Nagano when he was the star player.
"You wonder what you could have done or said to make it better for the players," Wayne Gretzky said.
Wayne Gretzky came into the tournament with a drk cloud
hanging over him anyway, with his name linked to an illegal betting
ring but he has denied all allegations of doing anything wrong.
In his 20-year sporting career Wayne Gretzky helped the Edmonton Oilers take four Stanley Cups and set 61 NHL records.
