Skeleton leader Zach Lund tests positive for baldness drug
US Bobsled and Skeleton Federation chief Jim Shea Snr has confirmed
that Zach Lund, a solid Olympic skeleton bob medal prospect, has been
suspended after testing positive for a masking agent.
Jim Shea told the New York Times that Zach Lund, tested positive for Propecia, a drug used to combat baldness.
"It's on the banned list. No question, he screwed up," Jim Shea said.
"He's lost his spot on the World Cup team and it's now possible he won't go to the (Turin) Games."
Jim Shea said that he knew that Zach Lund had worked hard and was not the sort of person to cheat.
However, the World Anti-Doping Agency considers the drug and one of its
contents, finasteride, to be a masking agent for steroids.
After the positive test, Zach Lund was suspended by world governing body FIBT pending a US Anti-Doping Agency probe.
Zach Lund, 27, the men's World Cup skeleton leader, had been taking
hair restoration products for several years, his father had told the
Times newspaper. The paper had reported that Zach Lund had previously
informed drug enforcement officials of his use of Propecia.
