British Surfing Association (BSA) gets money to pay for coach
Newquay-based British Surfing Association (BSA) is receiving a £94,000 grant to pay for a full-time coach, it has been reported and the new job is confirmed as being funded by Sport England for three years.
The BSA are also hoping to build a surf club structure to provide support for surfer and their sport in the South West of England.
The BSA said that the money, which represents the first proper government grant for 10 years, was a great help both for the organisation and for British surfing in general.
Top surfers in the UK have been self-taught, but one of the champion surfers, Alan Stokes, has said he is sure that a coach would be what the youngsters in the sport need.
Alan Stokes explained: "When I started there wasn't any coaching. But the sport is getting very professional and you need coaching.
"I think this is a great turn of events for British surfing. I think we shall see some talent coming through that we would never have seen. I'm stoked for them."
