Wild Oats wins the Sydney-Hobart race

wildoats Super maxi Wild Oats managed to take more than an hour off the record time on the way to winning the 61st Sydney-Hobart race. Wild Oats finished in one day, 18 hours, 40 minutes and 26 seconds.

Wild Oats came home an estimated 16-nautical miles (18.4 mile, 29.6km) ahead of Alfa Romeo, which finished over an hour behind in second place.

"We knew this was a downhill race and that we'd be very, very hard to beat," said the winning skipper of Wild Oats Mark Richards.

A crowd of several thousand watched as Wild Oats sailed up the Derwent River and reached the finish just before 0800 local time (2100 GMT).

Mark Richards said the race had been smooth sailing until the 30m super maxi blew its main sail close to the finish.

"The toughest part of the race was the last," Mark Richards said. "We thought it was just too easy going the whole way here and something had to go wrong - and it did.

"It doesn't matter. We still finished and broke the record."
