Wild Oats wins Sydney to Hobart yachting race
Australian yacht Wild Oats has won for the second time at the Sydney-Hobart race on Thursday.
The 30-metre sailing vessel, which was in the lead for most of the race's 628 nautical miles, is the first yachtt to win the race twice in a row for 42 years.
Wild Oats finished the course in a time of two days, eight hours, 50 minutes and 49 seconds, about 14 hours outside the record it had set last year.
Ichi Ban was more than 40 miles behind Wild Oats in second place with Skandia in third position.
Racing conditions were much better during the second night at sea after the yachts were battered by strong winds of up to 30 knots and swells of about three metres late on Tuesday and early on Wednesday.
Wild Oats had luckily managed to avoid the problems, which beset nine boats on Wednesday from a starting fleet of 78, including New Zealand maxi Maximus and the Dutch boat ABN Amro.
