Veteran sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is back in the Five Oceans
Veteran sailor and yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has resumed his place in the Five Oceans race in Fremantle three days behind the other contestants following problems with a broken autopilot.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, 67, who was born in Putney in London but grew up on The Wirral, served in the Merchant Navy and the Royal Navy so has had many years of experience on the seas, nevertheless, he had to stay in port for a statutory 48 hours while his team made repairs to his boat.
"We are pretty certain we have cured the problem that has bedevilled the pilots right from the start," h Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said, and he added confidently: "I shall be setting out with renewed confidence because the pilots will, at last, have the power they need."
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston trails behind leader Bernard Stamm by 776 miles but he is still optimistic about catching up on the rest of the fleet including fourth-placed Unai Basuko.
"I am not worried about starting this far behind the others," Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said.
