US yachtsman Paul Cayard becomes Spanish coach
Top American yachtsman Paul Cayard is to become a coach and adviser to Spain's Desafio Español America's Cup syndicate.
Paul Cayard, 47, will help in the preparation of the new Desafio Class America ESP-97, which is being built in Valencia.
Paul Cayard captained Italian entrant Il Moro di Venezia in 1992 and American contestant America One in 2000 and he was the first American winner of the Whitbread Round the World race in 1998 when he took Pirates of the Caribbean to second place in the 2006 Volvo Race.
Desafio Español hopes to finish in the top four of the 11 challengers who will be competing in the Louis-Vuitton Cup from April for the right to go against Swiss defending champions Alinghi from June 23 off Valencia.
Desafio Español is currently fourth-ranked of the challengers in preliminary races for the Louis-Vuitton tournament behind Emirates Team New Zealand, BMW Oracle of America and the Italian Luna Rossa.
