Swiss sailor Bernard Stamm wins first leg of Five Oceans
Swiss sailor Bernard Stamm has won the 12,000-mile first leg of the Five Oceans race when he completed the arduous voyage from Bilbao, northern Spain, to Freemantle in Western Australia in 43 days.
British sailor Mike Golding confirmed on Monday that was pulling out of the race after problems in the first leg.
Mike Golding's Ecover's mast broke only hours after he gave up second place to go and rescue fellow sailor Alex Thomson who had capsized.
Mike Golding, who had also hurt his hand when his boat was damaged, was compelled to head for Cape Town for repairs to his vessel.
Mike Golding said: "The decision to retire has been a very difficult one - clearly the timings and costs are major factors.
"But from a competitive and safety standpoint there are additional factors that have finally led us to make this choice."
There are still four more sailors left competing in the contest - Kojiro Shiraishi, Graham Dalton and Unai Basurko, and the British veteran Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
