Sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston finishes Five Oceans first leg
British solo veteran sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has completed leg one of the Five Oceans race on board his yacht the Saga Insurance.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, 67, who is the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, took the same number of days as his age to go from Bilbao, Spain to Fremantle, Western Australia.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston finished the leg in third position at 20:57.15 local time (11:57.15 GMT) on 28 December.
On his voyage Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was hampered by many problems during the 12,000 mile crossing.
Broken equipment, malfunctioning technology, bad weather and stray fishing nets combined to delay Sir Robin Knox-Johnston on the Southern Ocean leg, and fellow British sailors Alex Thomson and Mike Golding were forced to retire.
"It's been 68 days since we left Bilbao, far too long, and compares unfavourably with the 147 days it took me in Suhaili from the UK to being off Melbourne 38 years ago," said Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
