Royal Navy aid sailor Dee Caffari in Bay of Biscay

aviva A Royal Navy frigate has provided assistance to woman sailor Dee Caffari and sheltered her overnight after her yacht lost a mast in high winds in the Bay of Biscay.

Yachtswoman Dee Caffari, 34, from Gosport, Hampshire, was on the last leg of the 4,300-mile single-handed Transat Ecover B to B race from Brazil to France, when she got into difficulty - Dee Caffari's 60-ft yacht was damaged in severe weather 300 miles from the finishing line.

The HMS Northumberland warship was diverted from its course to aid Dee Caffari and gave shelter to her yacht Aviva so she could rest.

A spokesman for Falmouth Coastguard said the Northumberland was expected to provide Dee Caffari with some additional fuel so she could stay on the vessel.

In 2006, Dee Caffari became the first woman sailor to sail solo around the world non-stop against the wind and currents.
