Dame Ellen MacArthur wins Round the Island Race

ellen Woman sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur was first over the finishing line in the Round the Island Race, which was conducted around the Isle of Wight.

Over 1,800 yachts took part in the annual yachting grand prix around the Round the Island Race, which is open to professionals and amateur sailors.

The Extreme 40 catamaran with Dame Ellen McArthur as captain went over the finishing line at Cowes Yacht Haven in just over four hours.

After the Round the Island Race, a very happy Dame Ellen McArthur said proudly: "It was a fantastic race.

"It was an early start for everybody but the weather was great for us.

"I think this event is fantastic, at the end of the day how many events can you go and see 1,800 boats taking part, I think it's amazing."

The Island Sailing Club's handicapping system awarded the result of overall winner to Mark Taylor from West Sussex.
