Dame Ellen MacArthur launches round-the-world race
Dame Ellen MacArthur has launched a new non-stop round-the-world race
that pits crews of two against each other. The Barcelona World Race
will begin in Barcelona in November 2007 and end in the city about
three months later.
Dame Ellen MacArthur, who has not yet decided whether to take part,
said: "We are talking about two people together in a confined space for
three months.
"The dynamics of that will be very interesting. You will have to pick your other crew member pretty carefully."
The race will be managed by Dame Ellen MacArthur's Offshore Challenges
company and could also be held in 2011 and 2015. It will use Open 60
boats similar to the one in which she shot to fame in the 2001 Vendee
Globe race.
Dame Ellen MacArthur upped her reputation in February this year by
becoming the fastest person to sail non-stop solo around the world when
she managed this in 71 days.
Dame Ellen MacArthur is due to take part in a two-handed transatlantic race from France to Brazil in November.
Then from March 2006, the 29-year-old is planning a three-month tour of
Asia, taking in Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and Taiwan.
"After that we are thinking about what the plans are," she said. "If I
was going to do another Open 60 race, then the Barcelona World Race is
exactly the race I would want to do."
