British sailor Alex Thomson rescued in Five Oceans race
British sailor Alex Thomson has had to be rescued from his capsized boat after he was compelled to abandon ship in the Five Oceans round-the-world race.
Alex Thomson, 32, was in third place when his yacht went over in the Southern Ocean and caused irreparable damage to the keel of the vessel.
Fellow sailor Mike Golding went 80 miles back upwind to pick up Alex Thomson and the one-and-a-half hour boat-to-boat rescue operation was made early on Friday morning.
Alex Thomson left his yacht in a life raft while Mike Golding sailed alongside and pulled him to safety.
Alex Thomson's boat has been left to sink while Mike Golding rejoins the first leg of the race at Freemantle, Western Australia.
"I can't believe it - if there was any way I could continue I would, but I have no option," said Alex Thomson and his shore team said in a statement that they could not risk him sailing on alone.
