British 5 Oceans sailors face mixed fortunes including a giant squid
Great Britain's three sailors in the 5 Oceans around-the-world race are experiencing the good and bad as they head down the west coast of North Africa.
A giant squid hit Mike Golding's boat, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston enjoyed a bottle of Rioja wine and Alex Thomson was getting ready to climb his mast.
Swiss captain Bernard Stamm led by 530 nautical miles from Japan's Kojiro Shiraishi on day 13 but New Zealand's Graham Dalton was making for the island of Porto Santo for repairs after experiencing problems with the port rudder of his Open 50. He will have to serve out the obligatory 48-hour time penalty on the island to the east of Madeira.
Mike Golding was in third place, about 130 nautical miles adrift of Kojiro Shiraishi after being forced into port following the storm early on in the race but he was confident of catching the Japanese sailor soon, despite encountering a giant squid in a scene like something out of an adventure film.
"The decks and even the foot of the headsail were covered - it looks like squid ink and there's an awful lot of it," said Mike Golding. "It was pretty big, but I'm not worried I'm bigger."
