Brasil 1 wins the eighth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race
Brasil 1 won the eighth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race after an exciting finish in the early hours of Saturday morning when he boat crossed the finish line just off the Dutch coast near Rotterdam three minutes ahead of ABN Amro One with Ericsson close behind in third position.
This means that Brasil 1 are third overall, with ABN Amro One already taking the title.
"We only knew we could win in the last moments of the race," said Brasil 1 skipper Torben Grael.
"The wind had increased and normally ABN AMRO ONE would overtake in these conditions.
"We monitored their every move, but it wasn't until we saw the finish line that we knew that we had won," Torben Grael added.
The trio of Brasil 1, ABN Amro One and Ericsson had broken away from the rest of the fleet north of Scotland and have been in an exciting battle ever since.
However, the fleet have endured a frustrating time since starting out from Portsmouth on 2 June, making as little as 200 miles a day on their way around Britain and Ireland.
The Volvo Ocean Race, which started in Spain in November 2005, ends in mid June when the ninth leg finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden.
