Alinghi sailor Simon Daubney fails doping test
Sailor Simon Daubney from the Alinghi team, who won the America's Cup, could be banned for two years after he failed a doping test when he tested positive for cocaine-like substances, according to reports.
This marks the first and only time this has happened in the event's history.
Simon Daubney, who comes from New Zealand, defended himself by claiming his drink was spiked but he nevertheless resigned from Alinghi and he said: "I have resigned from Alinghi so that they can go about their business without distraction."
Alinghi captain Brad Butterworth and Oracle sailor Russell Coutts both gave evidence in Simon Daubney's defence in front of an America's Cup jury held in London.
The jury stated it was "completely satisfied" that Simon Daubney was being truthful, but the International Sailing Federation will decide his fate, and if he is found guilty, it will mean he won't be able to be active in professional sailing until the 2009 Cup in Valencia.
