Katherine Grainger and her sculls crew win World Rowing Championships heat at Eton
World champion Katherine Grainger and her Great Britain quadruple sculls crew survived a scare to win their heat at the World Rowing Championships held at Eton.
Katherine Grainger and her fellow rowers Debbie Flood, Sarah Winckless and Frances Houghton needed a sprint finish to beat Russia by just 1.07 seconds.
Katherine Grainger is aiming for a hat-trick of world titles.
The women's eight, featuring Olympic medallist Elise Laverick, only managed a disappointing last position in their heat.
But the women's quadruple sculls success was one of four triumphant victories for the British team.
Richard Chambers and Chris Bartley claimed the morning's opening heat in the men's lightweight pairs and the women's lightweight quadruple sculls of Laura Ralston, Lindsey Dick, Sophie Hosking and Hester Goodsell defeated the reigning Canadian champions in their heat.
The lightweight men's pair of Mark Hunter and James Lindsay-Fynn easily won their race and the men's eight also progressed into the semi-finals.
