Canary Islands bad weather postpones Atlantic Rowing Race
Bad weather forced the postponement of the Atlantic Rowing Race, which
was due to begin in the Canary Islands on Sunday. A total of 58
competitors in 26 teams were due to set off from La Gomera to Antigua
in the West Indies.
Among those taking part in the race are British Olympic gold
medal-winning rower James Cracknell and his rowing partner, TV
presenter Ben Fogle.
Forecasts for the next two days predict 32-knot winds around the Canaries and a new start date has yet to be decided.
Event organiser Simon Chalk said: "By postponing the start of the race
until this adverse weather system has passed, we can ensure the safety
of all the team entries, whilst providing the opportunity for records
still to be broken.
"With the right conditions, any team has the ability to win this race
and we fully expect the 36-day crossing record to be broken during the
course of this event."
The world record for the route of 36 days and 59 minutes was set last
year by the British team of Shaun Barker, Jason Hart, Phil Langman and
Yorkie Lomas, from Dartmouth, Devon.
New Zealanders Kevin Biggar and James Fitzgerald set the race record time of 40 days, five hours and 31 minutes in 2003.
