Alan Campbell victorious in men's single scull at Rowing World Cup
Alan Campbell was victorious in the men's single scull event at the Rowing World Cup in Munich on Saturday.
Alan Campbell, from Coleraine, reached home in front of the world record holder and the Olympic champion to claim first place and gold.
"It was a bit of a surprise but my hard work and perseverance paid off. I want to win so badly, my muscles go into top gear and the sprint just comes to me," Alan Campbell said.
"This is the start of my assault on the Olympics in Beijing, the first step towards my goal of Olympic gold," Alan Campbell added after his win.
Richard Archibald and his Irish lightweight four colleagues gained a silver medal in their final.
The overall World Cup champions are decided on after the three regattas in Munich, Poznan and Lucerne and the World Championships will start at Eton in England on 20 August.
