US swimming star Michael Phelps wins 6th Olympics medal
American swimming star Michael Phelps has won his sixth gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, and in so doing he broke his own world record in the 200m individual medley.
Phelps was victorious in a time of 1min 54.23secs, which was 0.57secs less than his previous best set in July, and with his win the swimming superstar has claimed his sixth world record in the Olympic Games.
23-year-old Michael Phelps, who is hoping for a total of eight gold medals in the Beijing Games, now holds an incredible 12 career Olympic golds.
Phelps was in the lead from the beginning of the race and finished easily on the freestyle leg, 2.29secs ahead of Hungarian swimmer Laszlo Cseh who came in as runner-up.
Phelps has become the main news story and star of the Beijing Olympics, having won the 400m medley, 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 4x100m free relay, 4x200m free relay and the 200m medley, and setting a world record with each race.
