US film director Steven Spielberg pulls out as Olympics adviser
American film director Steven Spielberg has decided to pull out from working as an artistic adviser to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Steven Spielberg said it is because China is not doing enough to get its ally Sudan to stop the "continuing human suffering" in the troubled Darfur area.
Beijing has not yet responded to Steven Spielberg's decision, which is said to be the first major problem in organisers of the Olympic Games have had to face.
Human Rights Watch are delighted with Steven Spielberg's move, and said it might help get other corporate sponsors to push for reform.
Steven Spielberg explained in a statement: "I find that my conscience will not allow me to continue business as usual. At this point, my time and energy must be spent not on Olympic ceremonies, but on doing all I can to help bring an end to the unspeakable crimes against humanity that continue to be committed in Darfur."
