UK sailor Ben Ainslie makes sure of Olympic silver medal
British sailor Ben Ainslie guaranteed he was going to receive a silver medal as he came close to getting an Olympic gold in the Finn class sailing in Qingdao.
31-year-old Ainslie, who is a double Olympic champion, came in as runner-up in the first of Friday's races following a long delay of nearly four hours caused by bad weather.
France's Guillaume Florent, finished 19th and 21st in the eighth overall Finn class race and can no longer challenge Ainslie for Olympic silver.
And Ainslie now leads American Zach Railey by 12 points as they compete for gold.
Ben Ainslie went into the lead early on in the race and was 30 seconds ahead at the second mark. However, he became caught on the next windward leg of the contest and had to be content with second place, behind the winning boat from Spain.
Now Ainslie can still be sure of a gold medal for the third Olympic Games in a row if he finishes no more than six places behind Railey in the medal race on Saturday.
