UK cyclist Victoria Pendleton wins gold at Olympics
British woman cyclist Victoria Pendleton has claimed her country's sixth track cycling gold at the Olympic Games when she beat Australian rider Anna Meares in the women's sprint final.
27-year-old Pendleton easily won the first two races of the best of three and her performance was outstanding.
Pendleton said she was thrilled to be part of the British cycling team that was winning at the Beijing Olympic Games.
Pendleton first began her career in cycling in 2001 when she made an impressive start by winning one bronze and three silver medals at the British National Track Championships.
Then she finished in fourth place in sprint contests at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, as well as at the 2003 and 2004 World Championships.
Pendleton won her first major medal, gold at the 2005 World Championships and at the 2007 World Championships she won three golds.
