UK Sport to reveal Olympic 2012 funding
UK Sport will announce on Tuesday how the extra £300m in funding from Gordon Brown's March budget will be allocated in the run-up to London 2012.
All Great Britain's summer Olympic sports, with the exceptions of tennis and football will benefit from the funding, with most of the money going to those with the best hopes of winning medals.
"Sports have to be able to show us those athletes with the potential to win medals," a UK Sport spokesman explained, and Britain is targeting the fourth position in the medal table at the London Olympics.
Cycling, swimming and rowing will be in line for big cash handouts and UK Sport will be funding sports like basketball, volleyball, hockey and handball for the first time, however, athletics may not do so well, following a series of very poor performances at last month's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
"This is an opportunity to bring the British sporting system up to the level of the best in the world, so sports have to show that they are fit for purpose," the spokesman also said.
Football and tennis have agreed not to receive funds because they are considered as being cash-rich sports already.
