Turin Stadium opened by Olympic bosses
The newly-renovated stadium that will act as host for the opening and
closing ceremonies at next year's Winter Olympics in Turin was finally
inaugurated on Tuesday.
Several hundred people gathered as the Stadio Olimpico, formerly known
as the Stadio Comunale, was declared open ahead of the Games in
February.
The
£20.6m renovation began in March, 2004, and now nears completion.
Including 8,000 temporary seats, it will have a capacity of 35,000 for
the Olympic ceremonies.
Originally built under Benito Mussolini's orders in 1932-33, the
facility now looks completely new, with a roof hanging over the seating
area around its entire circumference, a new commercial area and
underground parking as well.
"It's a matter of pride to know that this will be Italy's stage when
two billion people watch the opening ceremony," said organising
committee chief Valentino Castellani.
The stadium will eventually be taken over by the Torino football club
while Turin's other team, Juventus, may also use the venue for two
years when renovation on Stadio Delle Alpi begins after this season.
