Tokyo chosen over Fukuoka as Japanese city for Olympics 2016
Tokyo has been chosen instead of Fukuoka as the Japanese city for the 2016 Olympics.
The Japanese Olympic Committee voted at a Tokyo hotel after presentations were made for each of the proposed cities. The selection committee was made up of 25 JOC executive board members, along with 30 representatives from sports federations and the Japan Sports Association for the Disabled.
Tokyo, which hosted the Summer Games in 1964, easily beat its south-eastern rival city by 33 votes to 22.
Japan will now join Brazil, Spain, the United States and India among the potential host nations for the Olympic Games and the host city final selection will take place in 2009.
Tokyo has promoted itself as the "compact" choice and promises to provide facilities for 26 of 28 sports within a six-mile radius of the city centre.
Fukuoka, which is the biggest city on the island of Kyushu, said it would have its Olympic facilities at three separate sites.
The International Olympic Committee will be sending out requests for 2016 bids next spring.
