Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid among Olympic host applicants
Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid are among seven cities, along with Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, Czech capital Prague, Doha in Qatar and Azerbaijan's Baku, that have put in their applications to host the Olympic Games in 2016.
The deadline for cities to apply to host the games has now closed and took place on 13 September.
Some of the applicants are likely to drop out in June 2008 when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announces the candidates.
An IOC statement explained: "Cities are required to answer a questionnaire, and their answers are studied by the IOC,
"At the end of this first phase, the IOC Executive Board selects the cities that will become Candidate Cities and therefore move on to Phase 2."
The winning city that will host the Olympic Games will be revealed at the IOC vote in Copenhagen in October 2009.
No South American country has ever been the host for the Olympic Games, but Rio's application is in with a good chance because it follows the successful Pan-American Games that were held this summer.
