Swiss star Roger Federer beaten by James Blake

roger federerSwiss tennis star Roger Federer has had his hopes of winning Olympic gold in the men's singles dashed when he was defeated by American James Blake.

38-year-old Blake had not managed to beat Federer on eight previous occasions but this time he easily defeated the world number one with a 6-4 7-6 quarter-final victory score.

Roger Federer is already due to be losing his world number one ranking to Rafael Nadal this coming Monday and he has had a very disappointing season.

Federer made a number of unforced errors in the game against Blake and he is going to have to shape up fast if he is going to have any chance of defending his US Open title later this month.

However, Federer could nevertheless manage to claim his first Olympic medal if he is victorious when he gets to face Stanislas Wawrinka in the men's doubles quarter-finals
