Swedish athlete Carolina Kluft will not defend Olympic title
Swedish athlete and Olympic heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft has decided not to defend her title at the Beijing Games later on this year.
Carolina Kluft, 25, wants to contest the long jump and triple jump instead, which gives a better chance of winning to UK heptathletes Kelly Sotherton and Jessica Ennis.
Carolina Kluft explained: "A lot of people will not understand my choice and there will be questions but my motivation is not enough for the heptathlon. It takes 1000% commitment. For two years I've not had the same hunger."
And Swedish Athletics Federation spokesman, Fredrik Trahn, made a comment too saying: "Carolina hasn't said she has quit the heptathlon for good and may return at some time in the future. She has no competitions lined up in the foreseeable future. Now she will concentrate on the long jump and triple jumps. "
Carolina Kluft had cast some doubts on her future at the beginning of the indoor season when she withdrew from the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships because of a hamstring injury.
