San Francisco withdraws its 2016 Olympics bid
San Francisco has changed its mind about hosting the 2016 Olympics and withdrawn its bid.
The decision was arrived at after NFL side San Francisco 49ers decided not to build a new stadium at Candlestick Point, which would have been the centrepiece of the bid.
The US Olympic Committee are now going to decide in the next six weeks whether to bid for the 2016 Games and if it decides to go ahead, the candidate city will be chosen in April, and this means that Chicago and Los Angeles are the only cities now left in the running.
The team behind San Francisco had talked of building a new stadium at Candlestick Point between the city's airport and its business centre but the 49ers announced last week they were moving from Candlestick Park to a stadiumthat already exists in Santa Clara in California's Silicon Valley.
Scott Givens, managing director of San Francisco's 2016 Bid Committee, criticised the timing of the announcement, saying that it had come without any warning, however, the 49ers released a statement defending their decision: "We all love the Olympics, but even Olympic dreams need to be rooted in reality."
