Olympic torch not going to Taiwan any more
It has been reported that the Olympic torch will now not be going through Taiwan because organisers couldn't resolve differences with the Beijing Olympic authorities; having disagreed over the route the torch should take on its way to the Beijing Games.
Officials in Taiwan also objected to China saying that the use of Taiwan's flag and national anthem should only be used at torch-related events.
Beijing regards Taiwan as part of its territory, although they have been separately governed since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
A lengthy route is planned for the Olympic torch taking it through more than 20 cities and it will climb up Mount Everest on its way to Beijing.
Originally, the Olympic torch was to arrive in Taiwan from Vietnam and then carry on to Hong Kong, however, the Taiwanese officials claimed that this implied that Taiwan was part of China.
Taiwan's Sports Minister Yang Jong-her, commenting on the failure of the two sides to agree, is reported to have said: "We deeply regret the result."
