Japanese marathon runner Mizuki Noguchi fails to recover
Japanese runner Mizuki Noguchi, who is an Olympic marathon champion, will not be able to defend her title because she hasn't recovered well enough from an injury in time for the event.
30-year-old Noguchi had hurt her left thigh when she was practising in the Swiss resort of St Moritz.
Noguchi had to end her training camp on Monday to go back to Japan for medical tests but it has been reported that she will now not be going to the Beijing Olympic Games.
"Mizuki's recovery from the injury has been unsatisfactory and it is impossible for her to take part in the Games," a statement issued by her team explained.
Noguchi is disappointed because she had hoped to be able to successfully defend the title she won in Athens and to make it three in a row for Japan, after Naoko Takahashi had been victorious in Sydney 2000.
