Jacques Rogge says air pollution poses problem in Beijing
The eighth president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge says air pollution could mean that some events at the 2008 Beijing Games will have to be postponed.
Jacques Rogge said: "Sports with short durations would not be a problem, but endurance sports like cycling are examples of competitions that might be postponed or delayed."
Billions have already been spent in China to try and combat the air pollution in Beijing without success.
Many Chinese factories have been closed, and many others have been moved outside the city, however, ongoing construction and continued car sales have made air quality deteriorate further.
The dire situation with pollution in Beijing is known to have worried Beijing Games organizers and the IOC for some time, but this is Jacques Rogge's strongest words on the matter.
And Wang Junyan, the director of cycling events for the Beijing Games said that postponing events may not be possible because race schedules have already been decided on.
