International Olympic Committee to ban dopers from London 2012
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that it will be taking a hard line against any athletes caught using drugs at the Beijing Olympics by banning them from the next Olympic Games in London 2012.
The new ruling will be voted on in a meeting that is being held in Beijing, but it will not have any effect yet on any of the sportspeople who are participating in the Olympic Games this summer.
However, in future any athlete who has been suspended for six months or more for a drugs offence will be banned from the next Olympics, and it comes into force on 1 July so will affect any doping offenders at the Beijing Games.
Doping offences, which include blood doping and the use of steroids, usually carry a two-year ban for first-time offenders.
The IOC had originally explained that it would need a charter change to bring in the new rule and thus could only be made workable following the Beijing Olympics, however, they have changed it now to include athletes in the forthcoming Games.
