International Olympic Committee fines Austrian Olympic Committee
It has been reported that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has fined the Austrian Olympic Committee £500,000 for doping offences by athletes at the 2006 Winter Games.
In April, six Austrian biathlon and cross-country skiers were banned by the IOC from the Olympics Games for life following a probe into alleged blood doping at the Turin Games.
The IOC fine comes at a very bad time for the city of Salzburg, because it is hoping to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, however, the IOC will announce the host on 4 July, with South Korea's Pyeongchang and Russia's Sochi also standing as candidates.
The IOC said in a statement that the Austrian Olympic Committee was suspended "from receiving or applying for any grants or subsidies, whether direct or indirect, from the IOC in the amount of $1m."
The athletes who were banned had been found guilty of possession of doping equipment and collaboration in doping following a police raid on the Austrian biathlon and cross-country skiing team headquarters in Turin.
Although none of the athletes had tested positive, the IOC nevertheless banned them from taking part in any future Olympics because they had been found guilty of violating its anti-doping rules.
