Indian football skipper Baichung Bhutia in Olympics protest
Baichung Bhutia, who is captain of the football team for India, will not carry the Olympic torch as it makes its way through the Indian capital Delhi later this month, because he wants to make a protest against China's behaviour towards Tibetan demonstrators.
Baichung Bhutia's country has not been allowing Tibetan protests against China, which is hosting the Olympic Games in Beijing later this year.
Yet Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has lived in India since he was forced to leave his homeland in 1959, and over 150,000 Tibetan exiles now live in the country.
Tibet's government-in-exile, which is based in India, claims that as many as 140 people were killed in a crackdown by the Chinese since anti-China protesting started two weeks ago.
Baichung Bhutia, who is a Buddhist, was quoted in the Times of India newspaper as explaining why he refuses to carry the Olympic torch. Baichung Bhutia said: "I sympathise with the Tibetan cause. This is my way of standing by the people of Tibet and their struggle. I abhor violence in any form."
